Determining the nature of dating today is challenging. The never-ending trouble with figuring out how one finds and courts a potential partner is only multiplied with ever-changing technology. These issues are only intensified for Christians looking for a marriage partner who shares their faith. Christian dating advice for men and women is often hard to find. What is Christian dating anyways? There was a time when a man would simply approach a woman to ask her out on a date.
As a Christian, you can’t simply separate from your spouse one day and hit the dating field the next. And as with any loss, big or small, time is needed to grieve.
After God created man in Genesis chapter one, we find that God immediately set out to create a helpmeet for him. Genesis says, “And Adam gave names to all the cattle and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him. Woman was created from the rib of man Genesis ,22 , and took her God-given place by Adam’s side as his wife and help meet. It isn’t quite that easy to find a mate today. Since God doesn’t create a mate for us, we must do our best to find that “Mr.
Right” or “Miss Right” on our own. We do not have the prearranged marriages which were so often seen in Eastern countries where the parents did the picking of the mate and the children went obediently to the marriage altar. So where is our rule book for selecting a mate? Is there any such book? Unfortunately, no, there is no such book that will conveniently select the perfect soul-mate for life.
However, there is a book which will be the most excellent guide that you will ever have; that book is the Bible! Dating or courtship was designed for young people to have an opportunity to become better acquainted with other young folks so they could find out what they had in common and to see whether or not they enjoyed one another’s company. If they did, it would be a relationship worth pursuing, the ultimate goal of which would be marriage.
How to Approach Dating as a Christian
Just because you’re dating someone doesn’t mean you have to keep dating and even marry that person. Marriage, however, is not open-ended like dating. Marriage is living out a commitment to stick with your spouse. It’s a covenant relationship God established for husband and wife to serve and love one another.

The same story happens again and again. Young people, despite their better judgment and how they were raised, date someone they know they shouldn’t really be dating. Over time, simply because of the amount of time they spend together, they fall in love or into sin. They know in their heart it’s not someone they should marry but they marry them anyway. And then trouble comes Unfortunately over the years, this is a horror story we’ve heard again and again.
When young people head down this road, most times they don’t want us to counsel them and marry them. They don’t want us to know what’s really going on, they don’t want us to know what kind of choice they’re making, despite their better judgment and what God’s Word says. Many times sin is a part of this equation–they feel like they have to get married because they have entered into sexual sin with someone they know they shouldn’t even be dating in the first place.
People don’t just fall into sin.
What is Christian Dating?
Sunday 8. If you seem to have an interest to know someone of the opposite gender, I have an announcement to make – you are perfectly normal! Do not be surprised or ashamed, but caution is required here as well. Courtship may be defined as a mutual commitment made between a man and a woman to meet regularly for the purpose of knowing each other better and seeking God’s will with the aim of marriage one day if it is His divine will.
We should include here that there should be a clear understanding that if the courtship does not work out, both persons are to be mature enough to part as friends without resentment and with all due respect for each other’s feelings.
A dear brother in the Lord named Roberto has a huge fascination with cars, especially sports cars, like the Camaro and any model Porsche. In his native country of Brazil, he and his buddies often spend a Saturday afternoon test driving new cars at a local dealership just for fun. Modern dating was successfully launched during the sexual revolution and spiritual mayhem of the s and many of the principles of biblical dating courtship rapidly became less prominent and less important in our society.
The practice of courtship offered structure which allowed both parties to get to know each other before encountering emotional and physical entanglements. While many are in it just for the fun and physical, not everyone is so laid-back about it. Unfortunately, survey after survey indicates that many of those who say they are Christian are following on this path right along with the masses. Certainly, the Lord is not pleased, but rather deeply grieved, by the casual, drive-by dating scene that professing Christians are immersed in and with which they are seemingly quite comfortable.
